Lead a team well, even if nobody showed you how.

Most people are handed a team before anyone explains what managing one actually involves. The work changes overnight: you are now responsible for other people's results, their mistakes, their growth, and the mood of the room, and the skills that got you promoted are not the ones the job now needs.

A manager listening to a small team around a table

This is true whether the team is paid staff, a volunteer committee, an HOA board, or a group of parents who signed up to help. The mechanics are the same. Set clear expectations, delegate without hovering, hold useful one-on-ones, give feedback people can act on, and keep authority without losing the relationships that made you good at the old job.

The resources here are written for the first ninety days and the two years after. Each one is built around a specific situation, with the checklists, scripts, and templates you need to handle it this week, not a theory of leadership to admire from a distance.

Sound familiar?

  • You were promoted and now lead your former peers.
  • You are managing people for the first time and nobody told you what a good first ninety days looks like.
  • You lead volunteers who can quit at any time, and you cannot pay them to stay.
  • One person on the team is underperforming and everyone else has noticed.
  • You just joined an HOA, PTO, or nonprofit board and the meetings run on politics you do not understand yet.
  • You inherited a remote or hybrid team and cannot tell who is thriving and who is drifting.

Questions

Before you choose

I have never managed anyone. Where do I start?

Start with a first-ninety-days guide. It covers the order things should happen in: listen first, set expectations early, agree on how decisions get made, and hold one-on-ones before problems become patterns. You do not need to fix everything in the first month; you need to avoid the mistakes that are hard to undo.

Does this apply to volunteer boards and committees, not just workplaces?

Yes. Several guides in this topic are written specifically for HOA boards, PTOs, church committees, youth sports leagues, and small nonprofits. Leading people you cannot pay is its own discipline, and the guides treat it that way.

What is the difference between a guide and a playbook here?

A guide explains the situation and walks you through it. A playbook is more operational: it is organized by phase or week, with checklists and templates for each step. Both are complete on their own; playbooks are the better choice when you have a start date and a deadline.

How long does it take to read one?

Most guides are twenty to forty pages and can be read in an hour. They are designed to be worked through rather than read once, so expect to come back to the checklists and scripts as situations come up.
